Sun Surf is a sub brand of Sugar Cane & Co, a Japanese brand well known for their focus on reconstructing the early days of vintage workwear history. The brand has roots that goes back to the 1950's but it wasn't until late 80's that Sugar Cane started building the reputation for being one of the best denim makers in Japan and it is a reputation they still deserve!
This is Sun Surf's version of a classic Palaka check cap. If one thinks about the clothing history in Hawaii most people are familiar with the Hawaiian shirts, and even if Palaka garments are not as famous they are still equally associated with the history of Hawaii. Used as a workers garment, uniform or for casual use and worn by children, teenagers and seniors the Palaka is referred to as the Hawaiian denim!
Union Supply was founded by Japanese Kayoji Yasuda in 1922. The connection between Japan and Hawaii began in 1868 when the first immigrants arrived in Hawaii. Union Supply supplied work wear to Japanese immigrants working on farms and they also where a supplier to US Army. Since they handled a large amount of Palaka fabric, they also produced caps based on military specs.
The fabric is a 10.25oz woven checked cotton in navy and white in a classic Palaka style. These hats have been washed and please note that each hat might differ a bit in actual color, but because of this it will not shrink.
Please read our measurements, these caps run small in size.
