The Basque Yatagan is native to the entire Basque country. Its blade is inspired by the oriental Yatagan swords, which crusaders brought back from their journeys to the far east. Its characteristic shape is continued harmoniously in the curved handle, whose main characteristic is a pattern of big rosettes around the handle rivets.
This knife is said to be the preferred work-tool of Basque farmers and shepherds, and particularly the knife of the tobacco growers of the region around Bergerac where tobacco has been grown for generations. When the plants are cut during the harvest, juice emanates from the cut, which makes keeping a firm grip on the knife very hard. The studs that decorate the handle also have a practical function in making gripping the knife under such circumstances a little more easy.
