Hawkwood Mercantile is a small British brand run by reenactment enthusiast Richard Illingworth. The idea behind the brand is to make garments inspired by original vintage pieces but wearable in a modern context, designed to be long lasting and functional with thoughtful details using sturdy materials.
The Canoeist Smock is based on a vintage British SBS, "Special Boat Service" Canoeist Smock designed in the 50's. The original garment is a rare find today but there is one in the collection of the Imperial war museum in London that these repro's are based on. Given that the original ones are extremely rare today we sure are happy that Hawkwood Mercantile makes a reproduction of this iconic British wartime garment!
The smock is made of a waxed cotton fabric that will withstand rainy weather to a certain degree, and although its not completely water proof the wax still has many benefits. One is that the garment will stay breathable so that you won't get soaked in your own sweat while when wearing it! The cotton fabric will be long lasting while also adding protection from cold winds. The jacket is also fully lined with a thinner cotton layer that will make it more convenient to wear without fear of getting wax stains on your other garments, and that also makes the jacket comfortable to wear even if you are just wearing a t-shirt underneath.
The smock features a total of six pockets. On the front there is two lower expandable pockets and two chest pockets, where one is slanted to make it more accessible to reach with your left hand. This pocket also has the "storm construction" were the opening is folded when buttoned to ensure that no water will enter the pocket. On the back of the jacket there is a large pocket that can be used instead of a back pack, and there is also a small pocket located on the side of the neck just next to the opening. This one is perfect to store small things such as head phones but it's still a mystery for us what this small pocket was intended for on the original vintage garment.
This garment has many well made details and it's main purpose is to be functional and protective against bad weather. The waxed cotton will be stiff at first but break in as it gets used and we believe that the fabric will age in a great way.
