This scarf is made out of manually spun cotton, a slightly textured thread. It is hand-woven on a treadle loom with a narrow width, and the selvedges run along the scarfs full length. In each end, the scarf is finished off with fringes created by the warp.
This scarf is woven with a ikat pattern. This technique is made by tying the pattern on to the yarn before dying. After being dyed in natural indigo the knots are removed and the pattern is then created when the scarfs are woven. The technique is ancient and has been used by many different cultures to create patterns in textiles.
