The Merchant is built on the 8 last, which is also used for the Blacksmith. But because of the missing toe-box, the Merchant has a slimmer look and a lower toe profile than the Blacksmith.
This roughout leather is created using a reverse-suede technique. While most tanneries split, thin and weaken the hide to create the rough suede surface, Red Wing co. simply use the other side of the hide. By doing so, they avoid splitting or thinning the full-grain hides. This makes their Roughout leather just as strong and durable as their other leathers.
