Studio D'artisan was founded by Shigeharu Tagaki in Osaka Japan back in 1979 and it was the earliest of the five Osaka brands that later became known as the Osaka Five, five brands from Osaka that put Japanese denim on the map and created the foundation of Japanese denim production.
This t-shirt is made from a very special organic cotton called "Coyote". It is grown in California by Sally Fox, a biologist who has dedicated herself to developing cotton species that give naturally colored fibers. This is one of her brown varieties, masterfully spun and knitted on tubular "Tsuri-ami" knitting machines in Wakayama, Japan.
Studio D'Artisan has hade a great t-shirt out of this special cloth, which has a dense feel to it. Fit-wise it is quite long and there is one chest pocket. There are no side seams, because the t-shirt is made from a tubular knitted cloth.
This t-shirt has not been dyed with any dye. The cotton has a naturally brown color, a very uncommon thing in the textile industry. Read this interview with Sally to learn more about her work with cotton and the different colors she grows.
