Sugar Cane is a brand owned by Japan’s Toyo Enterprises, Ltd., also famous for the army reconstruction brand Buzz Rickson's and the made in Japan part of the Mister Freedom collection. Sugar Cane however is focusing on reconstructing the early days of vintage workwear history. The brand has roots that goes back to the 1950's but it wasn't until the late 80's that Sugar Cane started building their reputation as one of the best denim makers in Japan, a position they've held up til this very writing moment!
This is Sugar Canes version of awestern shirt made of Palaka fabric. If one refers to the clothing history in Hawaii most people are familiar with the Hawaiian shirts, and even if Palaka garments are not as famous they are still equally associated with the history of Hawaii. Used as a workers garment, uniform or for casual use and worn by children, teenagers and seniors the Palaka is referred to as the Hawaiian denim!
The Palaka is named for it's checked woven patten and it is believed that the fabric first made it’s way to Hawaii in the late 1800’s when Americans ordered tons of checkered-patterned thick cloth from England to make uniforms for the field workers.
The fabric is a woven checked cotton in navy and white and this color combination makes up an iconic pattern when it comes to Palaka fabric.
The shirt has two chest pockets and the shape of the pocket flaps makes them easy to access even if the pocket is closed. The snap buttons used are made of metal and the legend says that the snap button was first used on shirts worn by bull stock riders. A regular button and buttonhole could become a deadly trap if the rider fell off and got stuck with the shirt in the horns of the raging bull. The idea of the snap button is that is would unfasten quickly, allowing for easy escape from both shirt and bull!
The shirt is pre washed so there is no need to be worried about the shrinkage. We have to say that this is one of the most beautiful western shirts that we have ever carried and the thickness and the sturdiness of the fabric is just like a denim fabric and it might not be that strange because this Sugar Canes version of an Hawaiian denim shirt! - Sugar Cane Union Supply Palaka Western Shirt - Made of a beautiful Palaka checked 10,25oz cotton canvas - 100% Cotton - Traditional metal snap buttons - Two chest pockets - Woven neck label - Pre washed and wont shrink - Made in Japan
