This coat is a fine example of a work wear coat from the middle of the last century, a time where these kind of protective garments were commonly worn in lots of different occupations. This version is made of a cotton chambray fabric that's often referred to as a salt n pepper fabric. It got it's name from the process of weaving the fabric by twisting a black and a white thread prior to the weaving, that gives the fabric an uneven color and the visual effect of mixing salt n pepper.
This coat is old and has been worn a lot, both the elbows has been carefully patched using the same kind of fabric to makt the repair blend in to the garment. The inner pocket has also been replaced and we could guess that the original inner pocket was removed in order to use the fabric for repairs and a new one in a black fabric was placed on the inside instead. Even if the coat is worn and repaired we only think that the patina makes this garment more interesting. It shows us that this coat comes from a time were repairing was a necessity to make garments live as long as possible and as one can see this coat is still around today!
