Duluth Pack’s have been making handcrafted packs in Minnesota since 1882.
The story began over 100 years ago with the founder Camille Poirier, a French-Canadian immigrant. After migrating west to the northern waters of Duluth, Minnesota in 1870, he built a small shoe store with his little stock of leather and tools he had at hand. As Poirier outfitted those early American settlers, he saw a need for a new type of backpack to benefit trappers, traders, and timber workers. After designing and testing, he patented the "C. Poirier Pack Sack" on December 12th, 1882. Duluth Pack, as the brand would later become known, was born.
The Duluth Pack #3 features the tumpline, just as Poirier patented his pack in 1882. Methods of “head carry,” or weighting a load on top of the head, are standard across the developing world and when done properly it can actually be more efficient and more functional than supposedly better, newer technologies. The use of tumpline and head carrying is commonly used by Mount Everest Sherpas who prefer the method over modern hip straps. Many campers, hikers and canoers also use tumplines to carry their packs and equipment. You have one head, why not use it?!
This variant is made in a waxed khaki cotton canvas fabric. The tough 15-ounce canvas construction is a very durable material that is up all kinds of challenges and outdoor activities. The leather shoulder straps are well riveted for reinforcement and the pack comes with a heavy duty 6ml poly liner and an unwaxed tumpline for your head carrying business.
This pack is made to ride low on your back to allow the carrying of a canoe while wearing the pack. Inside there is a large and easy to access compartment for your maps or books.
