Tender Type 431 Long Sleeve Raglan Wallaby Shirt Viridian Green
Tender is a one man brand based in England and the founder William Kroll continues to make beautiful clothes inspired by the history of durable workwear with a contemporary style.
What we appreciate when it comes to the aesthetics of Tender is that the appearance may look simple at first, but William is always adding smart and interesting details to the garments, combined with interesting textiles that feel great to wear. As far as possible all products are produced in England, from the weaving of the fabrics to cutting and sewing.
The Raglan Wallaby Shirt incorporates elements from various Tender designs: the body panels of the Butterfly Shirt, the pockets of the Wallaby Shirt, and the inverted raglan sleeve construction of the Zoetrope Coat. The large bar tacked pockets and raglan sleeves allow this to wear as a shirt-jacket, while the softly curved hem and gathered cuffs give it the flexibility of a shirt.
This garment is dyed with Viridian, a green pigment derived from a stable oxide of chromium, patented by Guignet of Paris in 1859. Because of its improved permanence and even color it was a preferred pigment of artists including Van Gogh, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, whose green (1931) was painted almost entirely in viridian.
The use of Viridian paint in hospitals was inspired by the work of Bauhaus artist Johannes Itten. Viridian was found to be the complementary color to red blood, and it was thought that if operating theaters were painted green, surgeon’s eyes would take less time to adjust from afterimage of the surgery, thus possibly reducing accidents. The research was misconstrued by hospital managers, who used the paint much more widely across whole institutions, leading to Viridian paint becoming known as ”Institution-al green”
As with all historical dyes Viridian is less predictable than modern synthetic dyes and any color transfer inconsistency, irregularity or fading is a desirable characteristic.
