B002 is the second standard model of Blue Highway Clothing jeans. B001, released in 2008, were heavily inspired by the 1940’s and this new cut is of a completely fresh construction that aims to reflect the denim history while also being a pair of jeans fit for the 2020’s. The most notable features of the fit is that the legs are of a straight cut and that the waist is rather high in the rise, a feature that we have had many requests for over the last years and according to us a key detail when it come to making a pair of comfortable and good fitting jeans.
We wanted to avoid adding any unnecessary details to the jeans. We were inspired by a quote from the French writer and poet Antoine de Saint Exupéry who said "Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." This was a reminder for us to not over work the design, which we believe is the key in designing a garment that can be a fundamental part of ones wardrobe for years.
The buttons are made of brass that has not been tarnished to look older, nor have they been lacquered so that they will be shiny and bright forever. As the jeans are worn the buttons will age along with them, which will make the embossed designs even more visible.
On the top button we wrote Blue Highway Clothing and on the slightly smaller fly buttons we have put the Second Sunrise sun logo, a small wink to our present-day store.
The smallest pocket of the jeans is often called a coin pocket, but few people know that this pocket was actually intended for watches when they first came about. The Blue Highway signature small pocket is inspired by how many denim brands made theirs in the early 1900’s, with one side reaching up and tucking into the waistband. This way it is easy to slide your finger into the pocket to retrieve anything you may have hidden in there!
The back pockets may look like they are pretty straight forward but there is more to them than meets the eye. Their shape is not completely even, as they are slightly rounded towards the wearers sides. Even if it is just a matter of millimeters this makes the garment a little more well-fitting and comfortable to wear!
Rivets have come to define the very essence of what makes a pair of trousers distinguish themselves as jeans. We found many varieties of rivets but none seemed as good as the classic rivet-and-burr setup that has been used since the days of Jacob Davies, the first man to add the copper reinforcements to a pair of jeans, which became the key to the success of Levi's starting with the rivet patent in 1873.
We decided that rather than going for a cheaper and more convenient option we’d fasten the rivets ourselves in our studio, using a hammer. This way we can guarantee that the rivets will be fastened properly!
We will be riveting the jeans as we sell them, and anyone wanting to add them on their own jeans is welcome to do so in our studio.
Denim fans are probably wondering what the leather patch, usually situated just over the wearer’s right back pocket, looks like on our jeans. Well, this is something we have spent much time discussing as well! We had many ideas but none felt 100% right. A leather patch didn't feel necessary these days when many people are thinking about animal rights and meat production and we started to think about branding and advertising, and decided that rather than raise the price of the jeans in order to make our customers become advertising poles for our brand we’d rather just keep the jeans clean and trust that people who like them will tell their friends.
We believe that you should wear your clothes for yourself and not because of their branding. Since the patch doesn't have any function it was easily removed, which saved us some production costs and little bit of mother natures resources at the same time.
The fabric is a 13,75 oz Japanese red line selvage denim milled by Kaihara in Japan. We dream about weaving denim in Sweden in the future but thats not possible right now, so the best option for us was to order the fabric from a Japanese mill to make sure that it is made in the best possible way. The 13,75 oz thickness is just the right weight for these jeans and the feeling of the fabric is similar to the denim used back in the 50 / 60s, in many ways the hey days of classical, functional and long lasting jeans.
This unwashed fabric is sanforized and will shrink minimally when washed. They might appear slightly tighter in the waist when washed but they will stretch out when worn. The length shrinks approximately 3 cm when washed.
Our jeans are made at Syverket, a small sewing studio in Borås, a city that used to be the centre of the textile production in Sweden back in the days. When we visited them in November we met the four women that were sewing our jeans, and it was a nice feeling to see that our tiny production (We only made 100 pairs!) kept them busy for a couple of weeks, and we like to think that the bill we payed for their work became their salary that month. We would of course have loved to make the jeans ourselves, but there are not enough hours in the day for us to make that possible and this seems like a really good alternative!
Douglas is 180 cm tall with a weight of 90 kilos and wears a size W33.
Hemming is always included when you purchase a pair of jeans from us! Give us a comment during check out and we will shorten them before we send them. Keep in mind that you won't be able to return the jeans if we alter the length for you.
For hemming, we'll use a vintage Union Special chain stitch sewing machine, to match the original seam of the jeans.
