The Japanese brand Buzz Rickson's are today counted among the few high-end reproduction manufacturers of military and casual garments in the world! They strive to make true replicas by carefully researching and analyzing original vintage garments, taking great care to duplicate the material while paying close attention to technique and quality with the goal to bring back old forgotten techniques and machines needed to make garments of outstanding quality without compromises.
The classic N-1 deck jacket was first issued in 1943 as the new protective jacket to be worn by the US Navy, designed to withstand the cold and harsh weather at sea. The jacket is made of a thick cotton grosgrain weave, also known as "Jungle cloth", and this fabric is known for it's durability and for keeping the wearer warm and dry in cold weather.
Furthermore, the jacket is also lined with alpaca fleece. Compared with the more commonly used wool fibers from sheep the alpaca fibre is warmer and more lightweight, and these two characteristics is the reason for the USN to use Alpaca as lining back in the 1940's. It is also very soft to the touch.
The N-1 deck jacket in khaki was introduced in 1945 and is a bit different from the navy colored version. The alpaca lining have been removed from the armpits to improve movement and heat transportation.
The jacket is also made with two hand warmer pockets, a chinstrap if one need to fold up the collar to worm the neck, a Talon brass zipper that is covered to prevent the wind from getting through and to protect the zipper from the damage that salt water can cause if the jacket is worn out on the sea. The hidden knitted part at the end of the cuffs is known as storm cuffs, and these will protect and add warmth to the wrists while also making sure that the cold winds doesn't enter through the end of the cuffs.
Buzz Rickson's has carefully reproduced this garment according to the original ones with all the wartime specifications. We would even say that this reproduction is even better than the originals when it comes to the construction and the stitching of the garment!
