This shirt made by Momotaro is made of a indigo dyed woven fabric in sashiko style. Sashiko is a textile tradition from Japan and the idea is to use embroidery to strengthen fabrics. This could be used when repairing or just to reinforcing textiles while also adding warmth by building up layers of fabric and thread. Most often these embroideries were made using cotton or hemp thread.
This particular shirt is made with the shashiko tradition in mind but the pattern has been created in the weaving process instead of hand embroidered. The purpose and effect remains the same, as the thicker white threads strengthen the fabric while creating a decorative pattern. The fabric has a heavy and dense feel and it will surely age beautifully when worn for a long time.
