Studio D'artisan was founded by Shigeharu Tagaki in Osaka Japan back in 1979 and it was the earliest of the five Osaka brands that later became known as the Osaka Five, five brands from Osaka that put Japanese denim on the map and created the foundation of Japanese denim production.

D'Artisan's "GL3 Series" is a tribute to the earliest jeans created by Studio D'artisan and with that a tribute to a part of what really put Japanese jeans on the map back in the days. Made with D'Artisan's original recipe for looming denim fabric, with every detail carefully considered to maximize the characteristics of GL3, including the unevenness of the yarn, the yarn count, the rope dyeing color, and the number of threads in both the vertical and horizontal directions. It has a unique unevenness and roughness that cannot be achieved with modern denim, which is produced efficiently and uniformly  This is a product we are proud of, having finally been completed after repeated trial weavings, without any compromise.

Toyoda Industries later Toyota are best known for their cars today, but the brand actually began as a loom manufacturer in Japan back in 1890. GL3 is the name of one of there legendary looms, built half a century ago and one of Japan's earliest power shuttle looms, as there are no replacement parts for these around, the only way to maintain them it is to retrieve and replace parts from discarded machines of the same model. Maintenance is time-consuming to say the least, and the GL3 is an inefficient loom with todays standards that can only weave five meters per hour. However, denim woven on the GL3 retains the ruggedness and roughness of denim from half a century ago, making it a one of a kind loom capable of expressing the very essence of Japanese denim.

The jeans are pre-washed so they wont shrink when worn. You can expect them to expand slightly when you wear them. Due to the nature of the fabric all these jeans have a strong leg-twist, just as the original vintage jeans back in the days.

Douglas is 180 cm tall, weighs 85 kilos and wears size W 34. Combining the jeans with a vintage Wrangler denim shirt and a pair of White's Semi Dress boots.

Hemming is always included when you purchase a pair of jeans from us! Give us a comment during check out and we will shorten them before we send them. Keep in mind that you won't be able to return the jeans if we alter the length for you. For hemming, we'll use a vintage Union Special chain stitch sewing machine, to match the original seam of the jeans.
