Sugar Cane is a Japanese brand focusing on reconstructing the early days of vintage workwear history. The brand has roots that goes back to the 1950's but it wasn't until the late 80's that Sugar Cane started building the reputation for being one of the best denim makers in Japan. It's a reputation they still deserve!
Here's Sugar Cane's version of one of the most iconic denim jackets ever made! The type 1 jacket inspired by the one made by Levis back in 1936 a simple design has proven to stand the test of time. A traditional denim work jacket with a pleated front and a square-shaped fit, "chinch" or "buckle back" at the lower back that can be used to adjust the width of the jacket.
Combined with a pair of five pocket jeans and a plain white t-shirt the type two made up the iconic outfit for a new growing movement, the rebellious youth of the time.
The fit stays true to the original 1930's cut, boxy and short. Just how we like it! The fabric used is a 13 oz Japanese selvedge denim that has been pre-washed so that the jacket will be soft to wear from the start and it won't shrink when washed for the first time.
The detail on the back seen on the larger sizes (46 & 48) is known as "T-Back" and refers to the seam in the center of the back. This is because the denim fabric width was not wide enough for back panel, so it had to be sewn together, a neat detail find on vintage denim jackets in larger sizes.
The last two pictures shows the jacket together with a Vintage original Levi's type 1 jacket from our archive. We think it is nice to show these side by side so that one can better understand and appreciate the garment and the history behind it. Please note that the archive garments are not for sale. But If you ever stop by the store and ask, we'll be more than happy to show you parts of our archive.
Douglas is 180cm tall and weighs 85 kilos and wears a size 42. Combining the jacket with a pair of Indigofera Duke Jeans & a pair of Big Rock Candy Mountaineering El Cap Suede Boots.
