Vintage 60's "Gold Label" Gloverall Wool Duffle Coat Navy

Gloverall is a well renown brand from London and they have been producing duffel coats since it´s start in 1951. The story is that wholesellers H&F Morris, Harold & Freda where offered a large quantity of WWII duffel coats. This quickly sold and Harold son of a tailor got the idea to start producing duffel coats for their newly started company Gloverall.

Early versions of the jacket was used by fishermen and it is said that the toggles design was made to make it easy to button or unbutton the jacket while wearing gloves simply because it could be dangerous to remove ones gloves in extremely cold weather conditions. Wool was the fabric of choice for fishermen back in the days because it has the unique property to still keep you warm even when it is soaking wet. The Duffle coat was later adopted by the British Royal Navy and was part of the uniform during WW2. 

The name duffle is said to origin from Antwerp in Belgium that first became known for making the sturdy twill wool fabric used in this kind of coats. 

This coat is vintage and the so called "Gold Label" version was made in the 60's. So this is a great example of the early history of Gloverall coats. It also shows that the classic and functional design of these is something that has stood the test of time. The coat is in very good condition for it's age except for small damages on the sleeves in the form of small holes (see picture). These are caused by someone choosing to remove the buckles at the cuffs and this is were the old sleeve toggle was placed.

All measurements are in centimeters and measured on a flat surface. Width is measured straight across the chest from armpit to armpit, length is measured at the back of the garment from the neck down and the sleeve length is measured on the underarm from the armpit to the end of the cuff.
