The history of the Mexican souvenir rings is said to go back to the aftermath of the Mexican revolution (1910-1920). The revolution had cased the Pesos to be almost worthless and Mexican blacksmiths turned to melting down the coins in order to create something of a higher value.
These souvenir rings was adapted by American bikers in the mid 20th century and thats the reson why these are usually referred to as Mexican biker rings these days.
