This jacket is made in Japan by Warehouse & Co. Known for making some of the best vintage replica garments in the world and their attention to details when it comes to material and manufacturing techniques makes it hard to tell the difference if you compare a Warehouse garment with an actual vintage piece.
You might think this jacket is inspired by a type 1 denim jacket or an old work wear denim blouse with its single chest pocket, triple pleated front and the two needle buckle back. But actually, the inspiration for this garment comes from work wear clothing from the middle of the 19th century. This was the times just before denim had made its big breakthrough as the superb work wear it was about to become. It was not standard to rivet work garments yet as the method was invented and patented by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis on the 20th of May 1873. This type of jacket with a lighter indigo plaid fabric and a rounded collar is what you could call the predecessor of the denim jacket as we know them today.
Checked indigo pattern was among others common in Hawaiian workwear from the past. During the 19th century, Japanese workers moved to the island to work at the sugar cane plantations. The work wear shirt from the time also known as a palaka plaid shirt, often used this plaid indigo checked pattern. Another material brought along by Japanese immigrants came from dismantled kimonos. Colorful materials and fine patterns which would evolve into to what we today know as Hawaiian shirts.
We think this Indigo Check Round Collar Jacket is a beautiful garment. As always from Warehouse all the details is right and the feel of the fabric and every stitch is on point. The only noticeable difference between this and an original is that the original would have had hand-sewn buttonholes because they were made in a time before the buttonhole machine was invented. Great to wear as a lighter jacket or as a vibrant layering shirt!
